It is so hot I just sweated off four pounds typing this. Have a great weekend, all, and remember: Freddy is not a good argument for a supernatural existence. He can live inside wallpaper, appear anywhere and has no need of physical existence, except, arguably, when he inflicts actual physical damage. Yet he's such a bore, always growling away with his deep-voiced hahahahaha. If a man leads an interesting life, he ought to be able to make good conversation, is what I say.

The kids are off to camp next week. It's definitely summer now. Have a great weekend, all, and remember: It's a vaporfilm. You see it, you leave the theater, and then it evaporates, leaving just a slight residue, something like a vaguely unpleasant taste in the memory.

We did a big off-to-summer! show.

Summer is here. I'm going to do my best to try and enjoy it. Have a great weekend, all, and remember: Events like this, if they are influenced by anything, are influenced by news programs like your own. When an unbalanced kid walks into a school and starts shooting, it becomes a major media event. Cable news drops ordinary programming and goes around the clock with it. The story is assigned a logo and a theme song; these two kids were packaged as the Trench Coat Mafia. The message is clear to other disturbed kids around the country: If I shoot up my school, I can be famous. The TV will talk about nothing else but me. Experts will try to figure out what I was thinking. The kids and teachers at school will see they shouldn't have messed with me. I'll go out in a blaze of glory.

School is almost out in the South. It's summer time, baby. Have a great weekend, all, and remember: A depressing number of people seem to process everything literally. They are to wit as a blind man is to a forest, able to find every tree, but each one coming as a surprise.

New rule around these parts: When one of my kids hits a homer and I catch it on video, it goes on this site. Sorry I was yelling so much, I was very excited.

The book is … almost done. (For now.) Have a great weekend, all, and remember: If you give one to the work of a friend, and they're not your friend any more, they weren't ever your friend. As Robert Altman once told me, "If you never gave me a bad review, what would a good review mean?" He was a great man. He thought over what he had said, and added: "But all your bad reviews of my films have been wrong."

The book is ALMOST done. I swear. Have a great week(end) all, and remember: When Ethan performs the rather private act of pleasuring himself in the car's front seat, it's not funny, but when the dog is inspired to copy him, it is. The Edgars are this weekend. I get to wear a tux! Have a great weekend, all, and remember: Mad's parodies made me aware of the machine inside the skin — of the way a movie might look original on the outside, while inside it was just recycling the same dumb old formulas. I did not read the magazine, I plundered it for clues to the universe.

Off to Chicago this weekend, back to the Midwest. Have a great weekend, all, and remember: Alas, through a series of mishaps, the testicle bounces around the hospital like the quarry in a handball game, before ending up on the cafeteria plate of the surgeon who has just removed it, and now eats it, with relish. The surgeon is played by that accomplished actor David Ogden Stiers, my high school classmate, who also does Shakespeare, and probably finds it easier.

We're all headed to Florida for Spring Break this week. Wait … is DeSantis still the governor there? [tugs collar] Have a great weekend, all, and remember: The local policeman, in particular, seems to have studied for his job by watching cop shows on TV, and he uses such a bewildering array of law-enforcement jargon it is sometimes impossible to be sure whether he's kidding you or arresting you. His squad car is outfitted with a dazzling array of late-model police equipment, including a two-way radio. Is this going to be the first normal March Madness in three years? And the first normal one involving Illinois in … nine? Have a great weekend, everyone, and remember: I was out at the United Center last week for the big overtime contest between the Bulls and the Supersonics. Along with thousands of other fans, I was an instant expert, my eyes riveted on every play. If the ball had suddenly changed course in midair, do you think we would have noticed? What if a ball dropped all the way through the basket and then popped back up again? What if a player was able to hang in midair twice as long as Michael Jordan? My guess is that any one of those moments would have inspired a frenzy of instant replay analysis, and all three of them together would have induced apoplexy in announcer Johnny (Red) Kerr.
